Science Week

26th Dec 2021

The scientists in 1st & 2nd class conducted two experiments during science week.

Firstly, we wanted to investigate how many children can stand on a table without the balloons attached bursting.  Can it be done?  We discovered we could get 9 children on the table.

We found out that when our weight is distributed over several balloons, the balloons don't burst because the pressure is spread over a large area.  As a result, the balloon only supports a small fraction of the weight.

Our second experiment was the 'Egg in Vinegar Experiment.' We placed an egg in a jar and covered it with vinegar.  We immediately noticed the bubbles on the eggshell.  This was the acid in the vinegar reacting with the calcium carbonate in the shell.  This reaction produced a gas called carbon dioxide.

We observed our eggs for a week.  We noticed that a layer of brown scum formed as the acid in the vinegar dissolved the shell.  The hard outer shell was gone by the end of the week, and the egg white and yolk were surrounded by a thin membrane.
